Artist Statement
My work stems from my personal experience with Covid-19, looking at the emotions that we are feeling during this time of uncertainty. The practice centres on performance that is both pre-recorded and live to express the emotions felt. The performances include the social distancing rules put in place during this pandemic, so that the audience and myself feel safe. My performance focuses on me repeating a similar pattern in the painting which best describes my emotion.
The work created evolves around current events that have impacted the world since 2018, the work helps keep the topics simple for viewers to understand political or environmental event. As a personal experience with current events is that the news and media make the event a lot more complicated than they are. In the past I have worked in more traditional ways of painting using a canvas, where as the practice has changed to performance. Performance art was an unexplored art medium but since the start of this year’s practice, I’ve found a new love in art, seeing how artists can bring on other emotions with a performance and change that emotion into other just by changing a body part or a lighting change.
